before and after: My makeup routine

I have thought long and hard about talking about my professional work on the blog. I created this space three years ago so I could separate my work from my life, but I am seeing how fun it could be to share a little bit here and there. Every time I have thought about showing how-to's, or doing product reviews, I have found another blogger who was doing it better, at a higher caliber than I was thinking, so I tucked my tail between my legs and gave it up.

This morning, a co-worker of Billy's wanted to use me as a model for a photo project for school. She has been collecting shots of people in their work environment. She even convinced Billy, who hates photos, to give her a few minutes to snap his photo earlier this week. She wanted to come over to my house and take photos of me with my makeup and hair supplies, so I obliged.

I saw my chance to take a few pics of my daily hair and makeup routine as I was getting ready. To be perfectly honest, I edited out my under eye bags, because I hate them, but left the rest of my face alone. Since the bags are gone from all of the photos, you can still see a difference between the before hair and makeup, and the after photos, but I wanted to be completely upfront with you so as not to sell a complete lie. If you read through this long post, you can see the untouched before and after with bags present. Try not to hold my insecurities against me.

Also, I have never before posted a photo of me without mascara. I know! Even in all of my exercise selfies I am wearing mascara. So I am baring all for you! My eyelashes are blonde, so without mascara I look sick. Also, my lips are naturally extremely pale; I look like I've been pulled out of ice or something if I don't have lip color on.
I start out by using Epicuren Eye Cream and a benzoil peroxide zit cream on any blemishes, then moisturize and prime with Urban Decay beauty balm. I love multi-purpose products. If I can combine moisturizing, SPF, color correcting and priming into one step, I'm a happy girl.

I always do my eye makeup before my foundation because I make a mess and like to clean it up without having to reapply my foundation. I use Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner in black and
CoverGirl LashBlast Mascara in very black. I put on two coats, let it dry, and separate with a clean LashBlast brush before cleaning up the mess with a Q-tip. Insider tip: I was taught how to put my mascara on by my mother, who has some unconventional methods. She taught me to lick a Q-tip and use that to clear up mascara that got on my lid. When I wear waterproof mascara and don't want to use eye makeup remover, I will put chapstick on my eyelids to provide a barrier that allows the waterproof formula to be removed in the same way as regular mascara!
Next up is eyeshadow. I use Covergirl Intense Shadowblast Eye Shadow in Beige Blaze  all over my lid and brow bone as a primer and to highlight, then use the middle shade of the Victoria's Secret Ultimate Look Shadow trio {I use Most Wanted, but that link is to a similar color set} on my lid, and the dark color on the outer corner and crease. I throw on another coat of mascara, focusing on the lash tips at this point.
Next, I mix a tiny dab of Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer in medium with a tiny dab of Fresh Twilight Freshface Glow that I mix together on my ring fingers and pat on under my eyes, then smooth across my cheekbones and to my temples. I also dab a bit on any blemishes that I see. I like to mix the concealer like this because it is super thick, and the twilight acts as a highlighter where you need it most, also, a little goes a long way with both products. BTW, I am not trying to do The Rock's eyebrow raise in the picture below. My right brow is droopier than my left. Thank goodness my bangs cover that side so you can't usually tell as much as you can here. Oh great. Now you are going to see it in all of these photos hahaha faces are hardly ever symmetrical, and eyebrows are sisters, not twins!
On to the rest of the face! I use a Sonia Kashuk duo fibre brush like this one to apply my Benefit Cosmetics Hello Flawless! powder foundation in I'm cute as a bunny honey. I use the Urban Decay Naked Flushed palette bronzer to contour my jawline, all around the outside of my face and hairline, under my cheekbones and the sides of my nose. I use the highlighter between my cheekbones and jawline. I use my Amazonian Clay Blush in Blissful on my cheekbones. I love this color. It's a bright apricot that doesn't have sparkle, and it's perfect for a medium yellow-toned complexion like mine.
Almost finished, I promise! Because my lips are so stinking pale, I always, and I do mean always, complete my face with a colored lip. I am partial to lipstick because I need more pigment that is easy to apply frequently. Lipgloss tends to be too sheer and sticky for me. My favorite lipstick right now is Maybelline Colorsensational Lipcolor Warm Me Up, but that was in my purse, and I was in the bathroom, so I used Victorias Secret Glossy Tint Lip Sheen that is similar the one in the link. VS tends to change up their beauty products faster than I can find them listed online, so that's what you get. With that, my face was done. I was lucky that my hair had held up pretty well from the day before, so I used a 1 inch curling iron to recurl a bit of my hair that had gone whacky overnight. I combed my bangs into place and spritzed with Ag Smooth Frizzproof Anti Humidity Hair Spray. And there you have it, my daily hair and makeup look that works for a photo shoot!

Oh yeah, here are the untouched before and after pics with my bags :(

My Ginger Siren

Last week I posted a teaser photo of the shoot I did with Casey on my Happies and Crappies post. I can't even contain myself any longer, I have to post the rest!

Casey is one of the easiest people to be around. She somehow effortlessly encourages you to just be yourself, and in the short time I have known her, we have reached a level of friendship that contains no TMI zones. I know she will giggle along with me at a dirty innuendo, won't bat an eye if I mention a bowel movement or gas, and cracks me up daily. "I'm dying" is a phrase we volley back and forth like a hot grenade, because we are laughing so hard the phrase just fits. She is filled with movie quotes and uses them perfectly in every day situations. She is a great mom who acknowledges that raising a child is hard. She is fun, big hearted, and incredibly giving.

I wanted to bring all of these things that I feel about Casey into the photos. I wanted her to see them and feel comfortable. To feel beautiful. To wonder if that person was really her, because she had never felt so pretty. I started with simple makeup that flattering her perfect pale complexion, and gave her a ton of Texas volume and curl to her hair. She had brought over a selection of outfits, so I let her pick what she wanted to wear while I dragged my big peach wing back chair to the backyard and sat her down to pose. I swear you would have thought I was having a heart attack while snapping photos, because of all my gasps. I was delighted with what was popping up on the LED screen of my camera.

Now, I am not in any way a trained professional when it comes to photography. I am quite comfortable with my auto setting, and don't dare set it in manual for fear of RUINING EVERYTHING. I am capable of taking some decent shots using natural lighting and hoping for the best. I don't even have any professional fancy editing software. Just Picasa to change the color and contrast, crop, and do a little retouching in the most basic sense. Hopefully knowing that my skills are limited shows you just how lovely Casey is.
We started Casey out with what she affectionately termed "Housewife hair", in a cute blue patterned dress. Her adorable son Wilder was hanging out with us, and I happened to catch him with a smile in this one.
Casey was effortless in front of the camera. She would smile, I would snap, it would be fabulous. She took direction well, and even laughed when I modeled the poses I wanted her to get into.
This is Casey in a nutshell. A bombshell with a spirited side. You can see the fun in her eyes.
"It seems my soul is a gypsy"
This is my favorite. We had gotten to the "magic hour" where the sun was just buttery perfection. I had thrown her hair up into a messy side bun and pulled tendrils down to soften the look. She wore the style like it was meant for her. This was the very last photo I took, and it was after I had already said I was done. Good think I kept going.
I am so happy Casey agreed to let me use her as my muse for what I call my Ginger Siren shoot. It was fun to play with makeup and use my often neglected camera with a girlfriend. It's been awhile since I have had any kind of photo shoot action, and I needed it. I am now going to update my beauty website to include a "Lifestyle" portfolio from my four amateur shoots, because I want my clients to be able see these and get inspiration for their own shoots.

Thank you Casey, for being an awesome friend!

Laly's billboard and beautiful dresses

Happy Friday loves! If it truly is the end of the world as the Mayans predicted, then thanks for being my blog friends and reading on your last day on earth. If we continue on, then a big fat HAH! to those Mayan chiselers who got a hand cramp at 12.21.2012 ;)

Hope this week went by extra fast, and you are all done with your Christmas shopping, because it's only a few days away now! I am looking forward to a busy weekend, then lots of family time for the holidays. Oh, and my birthday is in a week, and I haven't completely shut down into an "I hate my birthday" funk, so all is well!

Not only have I been busy working at the salon, and learning about Steampunk for Lexie's photoshoot, but I've also been working with a SF based design company called LALY designs, who asked me to style hair for a billboard.

You heard me, a freaking billboard in San Francisco

There were lots of photos taken in various dresses that Laly and other SF based designers have made, but only one got to go up on a building, and it was a shot of the gold sparkle dress
Gorgeous, right?! Here it is live on Union Street:
Another dress from this particular photoshoot was the Silk Dreams dress which is stunning
Another look for this shoot was the concha dress, which has these awesome large sequins that perfectly catch the light and bring you all of the attention!
I was also able to provide hair for a Laly fashion show last month, where these three dresses got some more love.
I'm telling you, I am hitching my wagon to the Laly train, because this smarty pants designer/entrepreneur is going to all the right places! I can't wait to see what 2013 brings to Lara and the rest of the staff for Laly, and hopefully I work with them on more fashion shows and projects!

Steampunk and headshots of miss Lexie

Hellllooooo out there in blog-land! I'm alive, I am still keeping up with all of your lives by reading your blogs, I just can't seem to find the motivation to write my own posts these days, so they are becoming more infrequent, whoops!

I've been keeping myself busy with work at the salon, some exciting photoshoots, holiday preparations, and catching up on my rest when I can. I haven't been running as much as I would like because I have a nagging hip flexor issue that I think is starting to become a groin issue as well. My hips and pelvis HURT after running. Thanks to my girl Stacie, I was able to get 60% off of a pair of Aspaeris pivot shorts, and I am hoping those bad boys will help alleviate some of the muscle pain and hip issues after a run. Want your own pair at a steep discount? Use coupon code FROSTYRUN at checkout, it cuts the $60 price tag down to something reasonable. Maybe I should have bought more than one pair...

One of my exciting photoshoots was for my beautiful friend Lexie whom I connected with my good friend Tom for a Steampunk style photoshoot, with some pretty  head shots thrown in there as well.

Tom is amazing. He picked up photography as a hobby a little over a year ago, and I have watched his skills skyrocket and now he is a super fantastic photographer that I want to shoot "all the things" with.

Here are some of the gorgeous shots he captured right at sunset for the head shots, and then after dark for the steampunk looks.

We kept Lexie very peaches and cream natural for the head shots, leaving her hair softly curled, and then built up the color intensity and up swept her hair for the steampunk looks.
You guys, I have the prettiest friends. I kid you not, I have collected some gorgeous people to call my BFFs, and they are SO MUCH fun to play hair and makeup with. Also, these pretty people are super creative. Lexie mentioned that cute top hat her mom made {*gasp* seriously, I know, it's pretty awesome in person, and it's handmade!} and wanted to incorporate it into a steampunk styled shoot, so we scrounged up costume pieces, and wouldn't you know it, we didn't have to buy a single thing for this look. Ingenuity right there.
